Small Customers, Big Market: Commercial Banks in Microfinance

  • Used Book in Good Condition

* First comprehensive look at commercial bank experience in microfinance

* Shows commercial opportunities for banks in a new market

* Worldwide case studies and applicability

This book shows commercial bankers that they can profitably provide microfinance services to the poor. It illustrates, through the experience of particular banks, why banks have become involved and how they have made a success of their involvement.

The eighteen case studies all show that banks can earn good profits at the same time as serving the needs of people who previously lacked access to financial services.

The authors also demonstrate to foreign aid donors, policy makers, NGO staff and microfinance practitioners that it is often quicker, less expensive and more effective for microfinance services to be provided by commercial banks than by specialist microfinance institutions

Countries covered — Bangladesh, Benin, Ecuador, Egypt, George, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Kosovo, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines, and Zimbabwe.

Have no credit, need small bank loan but have a cosigner?

Question by Katy: Have no credit, need small bank loan but have a cosigner?
I will be attempting to get a small bank loan here soon. However i have no credit, but 1 account in good standing and 2 potentially negative accounts being taken care of. I have a cosigner with ok to good credit. Whats my chances with the cosigner?

Best answer:

Answer by Judy
What kind of loan? Car loan, decent chance if your cosigner has good credit – don’t know just what you mean by “ok to good”.

If a personal loan, almost no chance.

Can you get a small loan with no credit?

Question by someonewhocares: Can you get a small loan with no credit?
My boyfriend wants to buy a small trailer house for $ 15,900 and needs a small loan. The only problem is he’s only nineteen and hardly has any credit at all. Is there any way to take out a small bank loan of about $ 15,000 with no credit? If not, any advice??? He has to move out very soon!

Best answer:

Answer by psunuc

Since he is financing it almost 100% this could be tough. Most likely he will need someone with good credit to co-sign the loan for him.

This means that they will pay the loan payments if he does not or can not for some reason.

Q&A: Does anyone know of a payday advance/ online place where I can get a small fast loan?

Question by miss_tink_21: Does anyone know of a payday advance/ online place where I can get a small fast loan?
I need a small loan.
And I need to be able to pay it off in small increments.
Does anyone know anywhere where this might be possible?

Best answer:

Answer by CatDad
Payday loans are never paid off in small increments.
Typical payday loan: You write them a check for $ 350 and postdate it 2 weeks in advance. They give you $ 300 and cash the check in 2 weeks.
With online payday loans, you give them your bank routing and checking #’s and in 2 weeks they debit your checking account, whether the money is there or not.

Will the bank give you a small loan/check if a place doesn’t accept credit cards?

Question by Kid ‘Ney: Will the bank give you a small loan/check if a place doesn’t accept credit cards?
I want to pay for my apartment but the place I’m applying at won’t accept my credit card. Can I go to the bank for a small loan/check in order to make my payment? Also will the bank accept my credit card for payment?

Best answer:

Answer by funwithdouger

Get an advance on your credit card. you can do this at the bank or a bank machine. Then put that money in your bank account and write the check.
The bank would have a fee for writing up the loan and it’s a big haste. It’s much easier to raise the limit on your credit card.
Now write several credit card companies and ask for a lower interest rate. To get your business from another bank they will offer you a lower interest rate and do a balance transfer from the other credit card. They may even throw in a rate increase. Be carefull and don’t fall into to much credit card dept.

Where can a person with bad credit get a relatively small loan?

Question by Neal R: Where can a person with bad credit get a relatively small loan?
I had to take out a couple of payday loans for an emergency and now they are drowning me. If I could get an installment loan for $ 1500 or so I could get back on track. Does anyone have any ideas?

You can try one of the peer-to-peer lending groups like Prosper. Without knowing anything else, I can’t say what the odds are, but it wouldn’t hurt to try.

Q&A: Can I borrow a small loan from a credit place where I have a car payment with?

Question by Jo-Jo: Can I borrow a small loan from a credit place where I have a car payment with?
In other words, I have a car and right now I had it financel from a place called Pioneer credit. I was thinking since I already had payments with them that maybe I can get small loan for christmas. Would they be able to give me a loan like that and would they be able to just add that amount I borrow on top of the total balance of my car payment?

Best answer:

Answer by SPIFIMAN1

Auto finance is what I do for a living and that is going to be totally up to your lender to decide.

But as long as you have had the loan long enough, have a good payment history, budget for the higher payment and most importantly have some equity in your vehicle, your chances are very good.

Is it okay to get a small loan for your first apartment payment?

Question by : Is it okay to get a small loan for your first apartment payment?
Okay I’m trying to move into my first apartment with a roommate. The place we want, wants for the two months payment up front. I waz wondering would it be a dumb idea to take out a small loan to make that first payment.

Best answer:

Answer by Judith

I think that it is always a mistake to take out a loan unless it’s for a house or car. And I think taking out a loan when you will be sharing an apartment with a roommate is a very big mistake. Unless you and the person you are sharing the apartment together with is a very, very good friend. you need to consider that living with someone for a year is a long time and I’ve known too many roommates who turned out not to get along and one leaves the other holding the apartment alone.

Save your money and only then move. Don’t do credit cards. Live within your means and save at least 10% of your take-home pay. I have always had debts until about two or three years ago and, at age 65, am finally debt-free. Because I always had credit cards and loans I was never able to save money and I have nothing to show for all the years I worked. Do not make the same mistake.
